Cities make ideal escapes for couples, whether you’re planning a weekend away or a longer stay. For one, they’re usually easy to get to, which is a plus if you’re planning a short trip. And, with beautiful architecture, great restaurants, buzzing nightlife and endless entertainment on offer, there’s no shortage of romantic things to do once you arrive. Here are some of our favourite cities in the UK and Europe that are perfect for couples.
1: Paris
Where better to go with your beau than Paris, the City of Love itself. The French capital is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most romantic holiday destinations, and for good reason. With its tree-lined boulevards, charming bistros and world-famous landmarks, the city provides an idyllic backdrop for couples looking to experience those quintessential Parisian moments together.
If you’re looking for romantic things to do in Paris, the city won’t disappoint. To set the tone, head over to the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre, where you’ll find ‘The Wall of Love’ (Le mur des je t'aime). Created by artists Fédéric Baron and Claire Kito, this 430-square-foot wall is made up of 612 tiles featuring the phrase ‘I love you,’ 311 times in 250 languages. Drawing couples from all over the world, it’s the perfect place to say ‘je t'aime.’ And there’s nothing nicer than taking a leisurely stroll along the river Seine at the golden hour; turn the romance up a notch by booking a Bateaux Mouches cruise, and see the city’s best landmarks by boat as the sun goes down.
easyHotel Paris Charles de Gaulle Villepinte is located just 22km away from the city and a stone’s throw from the airport, making it the perfect pit stop for couples visiting the French capital.
2: Amsterdam
With its canals (there are over 160 of them!), and pretty, gabled buildings, Amsterdam is a picture-postcard of a place to visit. The city is also famed for its bikes, with 513km of cycle paths to explore – and what better way to spend the day with your other half than by discovering the city on two wheels, or a tandem bike, if you’re really game! There are several routes to choose from; you can explore the key attractions and canals, or head off the beaten track to discover Amsterdam’s more rural locales. We have a handful of hotels in Amsterdam, each situated conveniently close to the city. So, what are you waiting for? Book a stay and spend a long weekend taking in this European gem together.
3: Barcelona
Barcelona, the cosmopolitan, Catalan capital, has all the appeal of a classic Mediterranean city. Steeped in culture, with plenty of museums, galleries and centuries-old buildings, it’s also home to 4.5km of coastline. There are a few beaches located in and around Barcelona, with Barceloneta Beach being one of the most famous. If you’re looking for a quieter spot to relax in the sand with your other half, Nova Icària beach is a good option. It’s a 10-minute walk from the Ciutadella Vila Olímpica metro station, and just 39 minutes on public transport from easyHotel Barcelona Fira. Afterwards, you can enjoy a romantic meal for two overlooking the beach at one of the many nearby restaurants, or head back into the city for drinks and a taste of tapas – Spain’s signature, bite-sized sharing dishes. There are a handful of traditional tapas bars close to our hotel, like Tempura & Tapas, which is just across the street (or a 6-minute walk away); there’s also the much-lauded Tapas Variadas, which is less than 10-minutes away on public transport.
4: London
If you’re planning a romantic UK getaway, London has it all. Whether you’re into tourist traps or hidden gems, there are plenty of things for couples to do together in the capital. If you’re visiting in summer, there’s an abundance of green spaces to enjoy. Weather permitting, you can picnic in one of the larger, more centrally-located parks, like Hyde Park, Regent’s Park or St. James’ Park; you can have a BBQ in selected parks in the city too, including Highbury Fields. But, even if the sun isn’t shining, you’ll still find lots to do. Take a stroll along the South Bank of the Thames, and stop off at one of the riverside restaurants for a candlelit dinner. Or head out for the evening and experience the city’s legendary nightlife. Looking for more inspiration? Our London Travel Guides can help. And our London hotels – all 7 of them – are conveniently located across the city, so whether you want to go out out or keep your couples holiday low-key, you’ll have the very best of the capital on your doorstep.
5: Edinburgh
North of the border, Edinburgh is an ideal holiday destination for couples. Scotland’s capital is known for its beauty and old-world charm; and it’s loved for its Medieval Old Town and labyrinthine streets. Edinburgh Castle, which is located in the aforementioned Old Town, offers stunning views over the city. Venture into the Old Town itself and you’ll find an array of quirky shops, bars and restaurants to explore. And on the other side of the castle is Princes Street, one of the city’s main thoroughfares and home to many more shops, bars and restaurants – oh, and our Edinburgh hotel! If you’re looking for something unusual to do together during your stay, why not book a whisky tour? The Scotch Whisky Experience offers tours for seasoned Scotch drinkers and novices alike. Located in their restaurant on the Royal Mile – just a stone’s throw from the castle – it’s a great way to get better acquainted with Scotland’s national drink, while you get reacquainted with each other.
6: Nice
You can’t help but feel romantic in the sun-drenched heart of the French Riviera, and Nice is a great escape for couples looking for a coastal getaway. With 15 private and 20 public beaches, you’re really spoilt for choice. Private beaches are open to the public, but only from April to October. You’ll also need to fork out for these, but you’ll have access to things like sun loungers, changing rooms and other amenities. Opéra Plage is probably the most famous private beach in the city, and it’s also the oldest. With luxury touches, like on-site masseurs and a waterfront restaurant, it’s definitely worth the experience if you want to splash out. Plus, it’s just a 20-minute walk away from easyHotel Nice. But there are some really lovely public beaches too, like La Reserve or Coco Beach. Both are smaller beaches loved by the locals, so they’re perfect spots for picnicking and people-watching with your partner.
7: Lisbon
Surrounded by dreamy, dramatic hills, Portugal’s capital city is soulful and, yes, very romantic. Made up of charming, narrow streets, Lisbon is one of those cities that’s perfect for perusing at a leisurely pace. And because it’s on the coast, you’re not far from stunning stretches of sand and sea. The closest beach to the city centre is Algés beach, which is just over 30 minutes from the city centre (and 40 minutes from easyHotel Lisbon). And Alfama, which is one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, is a must-visit for couples; with cobblestone streets and traditional eateries, it’s the perfect place for a proper date night.
8: Oxford
Known affectionately as ‘The City of Dreaming Spires’ thanks to its striking architecture, Oxford is a charming UK city that’s got ‘weekend getaway for two’ written all over it. Rent a punt and dine at the Cherwell Boathouse or take a picnic and unwind at Port Meadow (which is just 20 minutes from our city centre hotel on foot). If the weather turns, the city has no shortage of traditional English pubs where you can cosy up for the evening. Check out our guide to discover more ways to spend your time in Oxford.
